Friends of Hwange Trust

Saving Zimbabwe's Largest National Park

In partnership with Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe + National Parks & Wildlife Management Authority

Dear Friends of Hwange,

I hope you have all had a good start to the New Year!  Thank you for your support in 2006 and we hope you will be able to support us again in 2007.  Please remember that any help will be greatly appreciated and will go a long way towards reviving one of Africa's most spectacular National Parks.

We have been busy planning for the year ahead!  This year is going to be tougher than last as the rains that Hwange has received have been very sporadic and far less than last year.  We are hoping to put up at least 10 windmills this year and increase the number of waterholes that we are looking after!

We hope you enjoy this Newsletter and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions concerning the trust.

Best Regards from Maha, Mario and all of us at Friends of Hwange.

At the end of last year we received our two brand-new Poldaw windmills from South Africa.  These have been installed at Kennedy 1 and Shumba pan and we will monitor their performance over the next few weeks.  We have installed flow meters to get accurate data, in order for us to make an informed decision whether to purchase more or keep searching for an alternative, such as solar power.

Friamie Vorster and his team came from South Africa to install the two windmills show us how to maintain and repair the windmills. Even though they had a few glitches (and days) at the border, they said that they had an amazing time in Hwange, while erecting the windmills!  Thank you to Friamie, his team and Mario for their hard work!

The first impression of the windmills has been great and they seem to be living up to our expectations!

Our main aim this year is to find the best alternative to the diesel engines to reduce our biggest expense – diesel!
