"The Friends of Hwange Newsletters"

In partnership with Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe and National Parks & Wildlife Management Authority

Issue No 6. July 2006
Dear Friends of Hwange,

The last month has been an exiting one for us……we have got all 10 waterholes up and running!!! Now the challenge is to keep them going over the next few months until the rains start.  This requires 5000 litres a month of fuel!  One of our biggest challenges though is getting it from Bulawayo to Hwange – please let me know if you know anyone who could help us with this! Thanks!

We also have a website!!! A big thank you to Anton @ Green Pepper Internet Travel and Talking Travel for putting us in touch with Anton!  Please visit www.hwangetrust.com and let me know what you think.  It is a small and simple website, but at least we are out there, which is so important these days!

Thank you to Brett and Don of the Save Hwange Trust for organising the

donation of a Toyota Land Cruiser, which they are kindly allowing Mario

to use in the park. Thanks you to Toyota Holdings in South Africa , for their

generous donation! The Save Hwange Trust have been a tremendous support

over the last few months, with organising some great donations and

assisting us where ever they can.

We had our first trust meeting in Hwange earlier this month, and for the first time everyone was present at the meeting including Mario and Barry who are based in Hwange.  It was great to get Mario and Barry’s input and to see how much they have achieved already!  Mario has done a great job repairing and maintaining the 10 waterholes over the last 3 months.  And Barry has been an immense support to Mario and myself in trying to organise and plan everything!

During this meeting we decided to install windmills and/or solar power in order to reduce our monthly running costs, as diesel is not getting any cheaper, and to find a more eco-friendly way to retrieve water for the waterholes.  This will initially be a large investment, however thanks to modern technology; in the long term this will reduce the running costs of the boreholes.  We would be extremely grateful for any help and donations towards this project.

Thank you!

We would like to thank the following companies and individuals
