"The Friends of Hwange Newsletters"

In partnership with Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe and National Parks & Wildlife Management Authority

Issue No 7. August 2006
Dear Friends of Hwange,

The Hwange National Park is drying up, but reports generating from the park by various people all mention the ample water that is available from our 10 pans and the pans that National Parks, Wilderness and other private safari operators in the Park are pumping. We have had a recent report that National Parks are pumping 12 pans and are looking at adding another 5 pumps. This was made possible by the generous donation of spares by Dunadventures Africa to Friends of Hwange, which were kindly collected in South Africa and dropped of in Hwange by Johnny Rodrigues of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force. Well done also to Owen Mangwana from National Parks for all his hard work for getting so many pumps up and running.

Last weekend we had Friamie Vorster, from Villiers Aqua visited us in Hwange to assess the area and make recommendations to us on the windmills. We have been given permission by National Parks to introduce windmills on a trial basis and we will be installing two windmills, one at Kennedy one for close monitoring and one at Tshompanie Dam, which has two existing boreholes. Thank you to WEZ for helping with the permission from National Parks. We have ordered the two windmills, which are being donated by Dunadventures Africa and we are hoping they will be installed by the end of September!

The 5m Poldaw windmill that we will be purchasing.

We have recently gone into partnership with the Hide in purchasing a tractor and grader. We decided to go into partnership as this reduces the purchasing cost and all maintenance costs. With the tractor we will grade roads and repair fire breaks (very important with the bush fires starting). We will grade roads to the waterholes making it easier for us to reach the waterholes for maintenance and repair and also assist anti-poaching units to reach areas that have been neglected due to the accessibility problems.
Our new tractor, with the new
front tyres sponsored by National Tyres!

Now the time has come, were we are in great need for donations to purchase fuel. We require 5000 litres of fuel a month for the 10 waterholes. A big thank you to Mansed Bulawayo for providing us fuel at cost! Any help towards purchasing diesel will be greatly appreciated.

National Parks in Hwange also require a few items for their White Rhino Monitoring and please remember that every little bit helps!
